Does committing to a longer plan actually save money?
Yes, and by a lot: all 186 programs that publish both a month-to-month price and a longer term charge less per month on the longer one, a median of 24% less. The catch is that the whole term is charged upfront, up to $3,895 on the day you start.

Committing longer lowers the monthly rate almost without exception. What the monthly rate hides is when the money is due: a $74 a month plan can mean $149 charged on the first day, and none of these programs bills a long term monthly. The right comparison is not one monthly figure against another, it is what you are asked to pay today.

A program is comparable here only when it publishes a month-to-month price and at least one longer term, each with the company’s own sentence recorded beside it. 186 of the 858 entries meet that bar. 643 publish a price at a single term, so there is nothing to compare, and the rest publish no price we can verify.
A rung labelled as a first month is treated as an introductory price and excluded from the saving. Reading one as a month-to-month plan would report the ongoing rate as a price rise for committing longer, which is not what those companies are doing.
